State of the State – Gingrich tops Romney in SC – Could Mitt’s taxes come out? – Globe on Murray/McLaughlin duo

ORATORY: Later this evening, Gov. Deval Patrick will deliver his state of the Commonwealth address in the House chamber, perhaps offering hints of budgetary insight and nuggets of policy priority wrapped in Patricky oratory nougat. (MassLive)

BUT MARGIN OF DEFEAT LESS THAN TAX RATE: Mitt Romney’s fortunes seemed to have changed a bit since last week. Well, maybe not his fortunes, since I’m pretty sure he’s still sickeningly wealthy, but at least his political future maybe be in trouble. It seems like only yesterday he was sitting pretty, and securely, on those hay bales in Iowa. Now things are getting desperate in the face of – it’s difficult to write this without laughing- former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s obscene win over Romney in the South Carolina primary on Saturday. What’s left for the Romney camp to do? Release the kraken! (AP) Or hire Sterling Moore to bat the nomination away from Newt at the convention.

LEFTOVERS: Here’s the Globe’s Murray/McLaughlin story from yesterday in case you missed it. Eno asks questions.
